Wilderness First Responder (WFR) Hybrid course

Wilderness First Responder (WFR) is the definitive course in medical training for outdoor educators, guides, SAR team members, and others who work or play in remote areas. The curriculum is comprehensive and practical, including all of the essential principles and skills required to assess and manage medical problems in isolated and extreme environments. 

Dates: April 18-22nd 
Course Fee: $750
Course Fee with Food and Lodging: $900

(Food and Lodging includes rustic cabins with simple bunk beds or cots and electricity. Separate shower and restroom facilities are a short walk from cabins. 3 hot meals are served daily in the dining hall.) 

*A non-refundable deposit of 600$ is due upon registration. Final full balance due April 1st
*All participants must be 18 by time of arrival

The course takes place at Northern Tier National High Adventure Base, located along the Moose Lake Entry to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW). Travel information can be found here. (14790 Moose Lake Road, Ely, MN 55731)

Leave No Trace Instructor Level 2
(Formerly Master Educator)

The five-day Instructor Level 2 Course is our most comprehensive education course. Participants are provided with in-depth training on Leave No Trace skills and ethics through practical application during a field-based course. Participants learn Leave No Trace techniques through a variety of methods—including discussions, scenarios, demonstrations, and hands-on activities—throughout all five-days of the field-based course. The Instructor Level 2 Course is also designed to prepare participants to be the best possible teachers of Leave No Trace regardless of setting.

Dates:  Aug 11-17, 2024
Fee: $425

A deposit of $100 is due upon registration, the remaining balance is due 30 days prior to arrival.

All food, housing, class materials, and group gear are provided.  Participants will be required to provide personal gear similar to what is required on a standard Northern Tier trek.

A shuttle from Minneapolis airport is available for an additional $250 per person.

It is recommended, but not required, that participants have previously completed the Leave No Trace Instructor Level 1 course.

Course Schedule – Aug 11-17:

  • Day1:  Plan to Arrive: 1:00-3:00, Checkin, Orientation, Dinner, Course Introduction
  • Day 2:  Classroom Instruction & Activities, Trek Planning and Preparation
  • Day 3:  Pack Up and Start the Paddling Trek
  • Day 3  – Day 6 :  On Trek: Application and practice of Leave No Trace and teaching skills.
  • Day 6:  Return to canoe base, Additional Instruction Topics, Individual Action Plans Graduation
    Evening Campwide Rendezvous,
  • Day 7 morning: Depart for home

Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) Hybrid course

Emergency Medical Responders provide immediate lifesaving care to critical patients who access the emergency medical services system. EMRs have the knowledge necessary to provide immediate lifesaving interventions while awaiting additional EMS resources.

Wilderness First Aid Training

When you are faced with an injury or sudden illness in a remote location, it is essential to know what to look for and what to do. Wilderness First Aid: Emergency Care in Remote Locations, is your comprehensive training. A must for outdoor recreationists and those who live, work or recreate in remote locations. This 16-hour training provides information on how to handle common injuries and illnesses when medical care is an hour or more away and meets the minimum requirements set by the BSA for High Adventure programs.

  • Saturday:  Classroom Training 8:00 am -8:00 pm
  • Sunday:  Classroom Training and Testing 8:00 am – 4:00 pm, Depart for home late afternoon
