Lake Monitoring Program:

In cooperation with the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency crews check-out Secchi Disks from the Baypost to check the clarity of the lake at predetermined locations. To qualify for the patch 5 spots must be monitored. The Atikokan base has a similar program in cooperation with the Ministry of Natural Resources.

Geochaching program:

By use of compass and map or GPS units, crews find virtual caches (historical, natural, and geological features).

duty to god:

Crews that use the "Northern Passages' booklet and have grace at each meal qualify for this emblem

extra miler awards:

The Northern Tier program is too big for just the 50-Miler award!

Ely to Atikokan; Atikokan to Ely:

Available for groups that travel across the Quetico Provincial Park between the Ely and Atikokan bases (either direction)

Grand Portage Trek:

This patch is available to groups taking the 135 mile trek from the C.L.Sommers base to Lake Superior, crossing the 8.5 mile "Grand Portage"

triple crown of high adventure:

The C.L. Sommers Alumni Association provides a certificate and offers these special awards for anyone that has attended a Northern Tier base, Philmont, and sea base. The link for an application form is here.

To help answer many of the questions regarding the Triple Crown of High Adventure certificate and award program the C. L. Sommers Alumni Association has developed the Triple Crown Award F.A.Q. that cover the most common concerns.

These individual segment are available at each base. when you have all three segments you have completed the patch and the Triple Crown of the Northern Tier.

Order of the arrow wilderness voyage:

This program is for O.A. members at least 16 years of age and not yet 21 to spend two weeks in canoe country. One week is spent on portage trail work in cooperation with the United States Forest Service, and on week on a challenging and special voyage with outstanding O.A. staff members. The link to information on this program is here. There are similar programs at Philmont (Trail Crew) and the Florida sea base O.A. Ocean Adventure).

float plane fly in:

If you fly in or out by float plane at the Atikokan or Bissett bases you are eligible for these emblems.

Northern Expeditions 35th Anniversary Patch

2007 marks the 35th anniversary of the Atikokan and Bissett Bases (which started as Northern Expeditions). This patch is available for groups attending these two bases in 2007 only.

i survived heartbreak portage:

Those who have taken the Heartbreak Portage at Bissett know they deserve a special patch to recognize that achievement.

zero hero:

if you camp out below zero degrees Fahrenheit while participating in an OKPIK program, you are eligible for this award.

bizhiw award:

Bizhiw is a native American work for the Lynx. this award is for camping out at least two nights during the OKPIK program.

okpik trek awards:

The Ski Trek, Snowshoe Trek, and Dog Sled Trek patches are for venturing out on an OKPIK adventure of at least three days.

musher camp:

This program is for groups that actually become "mushers" and learn all about dog sledding, dog care and feeding, and provide rides for the OKPIK weekend participants.

Cabin Stay:

A program for younger scouts that includes the fun of the OKPIK program but provides a stay in a cabin rather than camping out.
