Staff Openings - Trail Department
The Trail Department is responsible for the program that Crews participate in while in the back country. Most of the Trail staff are called Interpreter, Northern Tier hires over 130 staff as Interpreters every summer. Trail Staff should like the wilderness, be able to swim 100 yards with a PFD and boots on, and be able to get along with everyone.
Chief Interpreter - The Chief Interpreter serves as the head of the Trail Department, they report directly to the Program Director for their respective base. The Chief Interpreter supervises the Trail Staff and the trip schedules, plus helps train the staff and handles daily duties for each base. The Chief also manages Crew orientation. To hold this position you must be at least 21 years of age, hold a current drivers license with a clean driving record, and have previous Northern Tier experience.
Assistant Chief Interpreter - The Assistant Chief Interpreter assists the Chief Interpreter in directing the Trail Department, they report directly to the Chief Interpreter for their respective base. To hold this position you must be at least 21 years of age, hold a current drivers license with a clean driving record, and have previous Northern Tier experience.
Interpreter - Formerly referred to as a guide, this person works primarily with the crews going out on canoe trips for up to 10 days at a time. They provide crews with orientation and outdoor skills training; and are a resource to the crew for safety purposes, environmental awareness, and historical background of the area. Other duties are assigned, as needs dictate, and may include working in any of the other areas of the operation. Must be 18 years of age, have the ability to pass the BSA Swim test, and First Aid (preferably Wilderness First Aid) and CPR.
