Summer Individual Programs

Not every Scout has the opportunity to visit Northern Tier with their troop or crew. That is why we offer our individual programs to give scouts those opportunities.

Individual Scouts can attend a Northern Tier High Adventure Trek by registering for:

  • a specific individual program (see details below)
  • connect with other crews as a provisional scout

The programs are designed to bring individuals from throughout the BSA together for a great Northern Tier experience.  Northern Tier will provide the appropriate adult leadership for all crews within these programs.  Scouts are responsible to find their own transportation to and from Northern Tier.  A shuttle from the Minneapolis Airport is available at an extra fee.

Provisional Scout Connections

If you are a crew looking for individuals to join you or you are an individual looking to join an existing crew, the link below will take you to a “bulletin board” where you can browse posts made by others.  If none of those posts meet your needs, you can create your own post for others to see.

Lone Voyage
Canoe Trips for Individuals

The Lone Voyage program allows Scouts who are unable to attend Northern Tier with a traditional Scout Unit, experience a wilderness canoe trip.  This program is a 7-night experience in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness.   All Scouts must be at least 14 years of age at the time of the trip, or have completed 8th grade and 13 years old.    Scouts are responsible to find their own transportation to and from Northern Tier.

Fee: $850

A 50% deposit is due upon registration, the remaining balance is due 30 days prior to arrival.

Leadership: Northern Tier will provide leadership for each crew that meets or exceeds BSA leadership requirements.

  • Session 1: June 1-8
  • Session 2: July 2-8

A shuttle from Minneapolis airport is available for an additional $275 per person.

Order of the Arrow
Wilderness Voyage and Canadian Odyssey

Along with your one week trek completely designed by you, each Arrowman will be afforded the opportunity to leave their mark in history by helping maintain the portage trails and campsites in the wilderness areas . Aside from providing a good deed to each of these high adventure bases, every participant will have the opportunity to work closely with other Arrowmen from across the country, who have a similar interest in the future of both the program and the adventure base.

You may be thinking that this is a daunting task, but it is an experience unlike any other afforded to you in Scouting, in that it takes you out of your world and places you with people who want to do something different

Fee: $450

Leadership: Northern Tier will provide leadership for each crew that meets or exceeds BSA leadership requirements.

Forest Corps
Explore, Understand, Advocate

The first week of Forest Corps is dedicated to giving back to the land through portage trail restoration. Participants camp in the wilderness and spend their days repairing trails so that other visitors can enjoy the Boundary Waters for years to come. Through this conservation project, participants gain hands-on experience in wildland stewardship and build lifelong bonds with crewmates.

The second week of Forest Corps is an individualized canoe trek designed around exploring the natural beauty of this environment, while completing the requirements of the Leave No Trace Trainer course.   As a group, the participants and instructors prepare an itinerary based on the goals and experiences of each crew member, leaving time each day to better understand the areas travelled.

Fee: $850

Frequently Asked Questions - Individual Programs

What age do Scouts need to be to participate in Individual Programs?

For most individual programs, the minimum age is 14 to participate.  The OAWV and OACO programs have a minimum age of 16.

Can adults participate in individual programs?

Our individual programs are designed to give Scouts an opportunity they might not otherwise get.  Some of our programs are incredibly popular and have limited capacity and therefore we limit them to youth Scouts only.  Others have more availability or are less popular and we do allow adult participation in those sessions.  Regardless of the session, adult participation must meet all youth protection requirements.

How do you meet the adult supervision requirements for these programs?

Northern Tier provides 2 highly trained staff as the adult leaders on individual programs.  In the circumstance where adult leaders have signed up to participate, we may utilize those adults as well.

How does my Scout get to Northern Tier?

It is up to you what transportation looks like.  Northern Tier does provide a shuttle from the Minneapolis St. Paul Airport (MSP).  You will need to fly in by noon on your first day of program.  Our shuttle driver will pick you up at door 4 on the Baggage Claim level of Terminal 1.

Please check with airlines before booking tickets.  Some airlines require an adult to pick youth up at the gate, we will  not have an adult available to do that.  Your Scout will need to be able to make their way through the airport and to the shuttle independently.

There is an additional fee for the shuttle (currently $275, but this is subject to change by season – what is in the registration system is the accurate fee) and that can be booked as part of the registration process.

If you are driving yourself or your Scout to Northern Tier, plan to arrive by mid-afternoon on your arrival day.

What time should we schedule our flights, if we plan to take the shuttle?

Flights for Summer Programs:

  • Arrival flight should be scheduled for the starting day of your adventure.  You should arrive at MSP before noon.
  • Departure flight should be scheduled for the last day of your adventure.  You should not book a flight earlier than 2:00 pm.  Scouts will leave Northern Tier with a bag breakfast around 7:00 am.
